Clinic checking their online presence across Google and social media

Which Platform Are Your Patients Actually Checking You On?

July 28, 2026•2 min read

Short answer: yes, walk-ins and word of mouth alone won't cut it anymore, because your patients have already changed how they decide who to trust, whether you've noticed it or not.

Here's why.

Patient behavior has changed.

Right now, before someone ever calls your clinic, they're busy checking your digital footprint- your website, your social media, whether that's Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Xiaohongshu, YouTube, Threads, and yes, your Google Business Profile too.

So the real question isn't whether patients are checking you out online. They are. The question is, which platform exactly, and what do they see when they get there?

Why does this matter more than it used to?

A generation ago, a patient chose a clinic because their neighbor recommended it, or their family had always gone there. That still happens, sure. But even then, even when someone's already been referred to you by name, there's a good chance they'll still Google you first before calling.

And here's a number worth knowing: 83% of consumers used Google to evaluate local businesses in 2025 more than every other platform combined, according to Bright Local's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey. For your clinic, that means Google is very likely the very first impression a patient forms of you, often before they've even opened your website.

So which platform should you actually focus on?

Honestly, you don't need to be everywhere at once, that's a fast way to burn out your team trying to keep up with six platforms. What matters more is knowing where your patients are looking, and making sure that specific spot looks alive, current, and trustworthy.

For most clinics, that starting point is your Google Business Profile since it's usually the first thing that shows up when someone searches your name or "clinic near me." After that, it depends on your patients. Younger patients might be checking your Instagram or TikTok. Others might just be reading your Google reviews and calling it a day.

What does "checking you out" look like for a patient?

Picture someone who just moved to your area, or got a recommendation from a friend. Before calling, they type your clinic's name into Google. What comes up? A handful of old reviews from three years ago? A profile with outdated opening days and hours? Or a clinic that looks active, current, and clearly still open for business?

That split-second impression often decides whether they pick up the phone, or scroll to the next result.

The Bottom Line:

Ask your team a simple question: which platform are our patients usually checking us on? Not which one you post on most but which one your patients actually use to decide. Sometimes those are two completely different answers, and that gap is usually where the real problem hides.

Your patients are checking you out online. The real question is, what are they seeing?

This is all part of what we do in building a patient acquisition system.
