Clinic owner reviewing outdated marketing strategy against changing patient search behavior

Why Has My Clinic Marketing Stopped Working?

August 02, 2026•2 min read

Short answer: it's probably not that your marketing stopped working. It's that patients stopped searching the same way and most clinics are still marketing to how patients searched five years ago.

If you own a clinic, this one's for you.

You've probably tried ads. Landing pages. SEO. Maybe even a WhatsApp bot. At this point, when someone shares yet another digital marketing "hack" you should try, you feel jaded before they've even finished the sentence.

You feel like you've tried it all. And honestly, you're ready to throw in the towel.

But have you really tried it all - or the same playbook, over and over?

Here's the uncomfortable question worth sitting with: are you actually trying new approaches, or running the same 2021 strategy and just hoping this time it works differently?

Because here's the thing. It's not that these systems stopped working. It's that patient behavior has changed  and it's changed more than most clinic owners realize.

What actually changed?

A few short years ago, a patient would search on Google, click through a few clinic websites, compare, and decide. That's the model most clinic marketing was built around.

Today, a growing number of patients are asking AI tools directly instead and something interesting happens when they do. Research from Pew Research Center, analyzed by house of summary, found that when an AI summary appears in someone's search, they click through to a traditional website in only about 8% of visits compared to 15% when no AI summary shows up at all. In other words, AI answers are absorbing a chunk of the clicks websites used to count on.

So why does it feel like your marketing "stopped working"?

Because in a way, it did not because it's broken, but because it was built for patients who searched differently. If your entire strategy still assumes someone will Google you, click through, and land on your website, you're optimizing for a shrinking piece of the pie.

What do you actually do about this?

You don't need to abandon everything and start over. But it does mean showing up in more places than just a website waiting to be clicked including making sure the content AI tools pull from actually mentions your clinic clearly, accurately, and often.

We've actually written about where exactly your clinic's growth might be leaking this shift in search behavior is very likely part of that picture, especially if most of your current strategy still leans on old-school SEO.

The Bottom Line:

You're not behind because you didn't try hard enough. But it is because the target moved, while most clinics kept aiming at where it used to be. Once you see that, catching up becomes a lot less overwhelming.
